Why Virgin Active Pilates is different from our other Pilates classes

Unlike many boutique studios, Virgin Active Pilates isn’t reserved for the thinnest, the fittest and the few. This is real Pilates for real bodies.

What types of Pilates are most popular in South Africa?

South African Virgin Active clubs offer two main categories of Pilates:

Mat Pilates classes – This includes:

  • Pilates Align: A mindful, methodical class with slower movements and longer holds to deepen muscle engagement.
  • Pilates Athletic: A high-energy mat class that blends HIIT-style movement with classic Pilates techniques for a full-body sweat.

Reformer Pilates classes – A resistance-based Pilates experience using a Reformer bed, offered in different formats:

  • Reformer Foundations: A beginner-friendly class focusing on core principles and confidence-building.
  • Reformer Align: A class that balances physical movement and mental focus through intentional sequences.
  • Reformer Recovery: A restorative experience using stretches to improve mobility and support muscle healing.
  • Athletic Reformer: A high-intensity format targeting muscular endurance and stamina using advanced Reformer sequences.
Do I need to bring anything to a Pilates class?

Yes. While some equipment is provided at Virgin Active clubs, it’s best to bring:

  • A sweat towel.
  • A water bottle.
  • Grip socks for Reformer classes.
  • Trainers for Reformer Athletic or Reformer Align (if listed).
  • Your own mat for Mat Pilates (optional at some clubs).
  • Check with your club if you’re unsure..
How much do Pilates classes cost in South Africa?

Pilates classes at Virgin Active are included in your membership, whether you’re doing Mat or Reformer Pilates. Certain clubs may offer Reformer classes only at selected branches, so check with your nearest location.

Are there beginner-friendly Pilates classes in South Africa?

Yes. Reformer Foundations is specifically designed for newcomers. Pilates Align on the mat side also offers a slower pace that’s ideal for beginners. All instructors are trained to support first-timers and help you move confidently.

What should I wear to a Pilates class?

We recommend that you wear comfortable, stretchy clothing that lets you move freely during Pilates classes. Avoid loose-fitting tops or accessories. No shoes are needed for Mat Pilates. Wear grip socks or trainers for Reformer Pilates classes, depending on the format.

Can I practice Pilates if I’m not flexible?

Yes. Pilates improves flexibility over time. All Virgin Active classes allow you to go at your own pace, whether you’re a beginner or returning after a break. You’ll notice better strength, control, and flexibility with regular practice.
