The days are getting longer and warmer. A sign that summer is on the way. And it’s the time of year that gets South Africans moving again to improve their physical health. An integral part of this journey is knowing where to start and what, specifically, to do to achieve your personal goal. It’s not always a “one size fits all” solution. If you want to get to your desired level of fitness, you should consider hiring a Personal Trainer.

We asked one of our Personal Trainers popular questions frequently asked by people looking to work with a Personal Trainer in South Africa. Natasha Adams is one of Virgin Active’s many experienced Personal Trainers. Here’s what she had to say.

How much does it cost to have a Personal Trainer in South Africa?
A Personal Trainer in South Africa usually costs between R200 and R1000 per workout session. The more experienced Personal Trainers tend to charge more, but some offer group sessions. Virgin Active offers Personal Trainer Intro Packs that allow first-timers to explore the benefits of training with a Personal Trainer at a reduced fee. A PT Intro Pack includes an initial consultation to get an understanding of your goals and fitness journey so far, as well as any injuries or concerns you might have. It also includes two full training sessions to fully experience the benefits.

What does a Personal Trainer do?
A Personal Trainer will provide you with a scientifically-based training programme tailored to your individual training goals and preferences. The PT will guide you through your training journey by assisting you to set realistic and achievable goals. The Personal Trainer will also assist you with nutritional guidelines.

Are Personal Trainers worth it? What are the benefits of getting a Personal Trainer?
If they have a passion for what they do, yes, definitely.

There are a lot of benefits, including but not limited to:

  • Personal Trainers can customise a workout that suits the client’s needs and fitness level.
  • They can help to ensure proper technique to avoid injuries.
  • These fitness experts can optimise your workouts to make them more efficient for your time spent in the gym.
  • A Personal Trainer can be your “accountability partner” to help you stay motivated and achieve results.
  • Personal Trainers can support you and help you develop sustainable habits to ensure long-term success.

What skills and qualifications do you need to become a Personal Trainer?
To become a Personal Trainer, you need to complete a Personal Training course provided by a CATHSSETA recognised Training Institution.

How often should you see a Personal Trainer?
This will ultimately depend on your goals and what you are willing to invest from a financial point of view. A good guideline to aim for is 2 – 3 times per week.

What is the difference between a Personal Trainer and an Instructor?
Personal Trainers focus on personalised fitness training, individual goals, and one-on-one or small-group instruction. On the other hand, fitness instructors lead group fitness classes with a structured format and provide general guidance to larger groups.

How soon will I see results when training with a Personal Trainer?
Fitness results are guaranteed when the client is committed and puts in the effort. I generally expect them to start seeing results from 60 to 90 days at least, just to give them reasonable expectations. Personal Training is at its most effective when done in conjunction with a well-balanced diet.

I want to get fit – Is a 30-minute workout per session with a Personal Trainer enough?
Lots can be achieved in 30 minutes. It depends on the workout and the client. Some clients can exercise for longer, depending on their fitness level.

How do I choose a Personal Trainer?
Ensure the Personal Trainer has a formal, recognised PT qualification and that they invest in Continuous professional development ( CPD’s).

Have a look at what the Personal Trainer specialises in. Get references from previous clients and observe them on the gym floor. A PT has to be approachable and have excellent interpersonal skills.

Set up a consultation with the Personal Trainer to discuss your training goals, as well as find out about the Personal Trainer’s Training packages. At Virgin Active, we offer our members a PT intro pack that includes a consultation and two training sessions, This is available at a discounted price, allowing you to see if you want to continue with the PT.

Are online Personal Trainers effective?
It depends on the client’s needs. Some people need to have someone to stand next to them. It can work for some, and for others, it might not.

What are the results of 3 months of Personal Training sessions?
It depends on the work and commitment that was put in. I expect results after 90 days.

Do you lose weight faster with a Personal Trainer?
The Personal Trainer will give you proper guidance and a great workout plan to help you get results as efficiently as possible. It can be faster if both work together and have a proper fitness and meal plan.
