Who says swimming is just for the beach or your friend’s pool in South Africa? If you’ve got access to a gym with a swimming pool, you’ve got the ultimate fitness combo right on your doorstep. Here in South Africa, gym pools are becoming more than just a cool-off spot after a tough workout—they’re a full-on wellness destination. You’re in the right place if you’ve ever wondered about hitting the lanes for a few laps or simply chilling in a heated leisure pool.

We spoke to Robin Raven, our swimming expert and National Swim Manager, and Zolelwa Mbobo, our health and safety expert and Head of Health and Safety, to share all the expert information you need to know.

Do all gyms in South Africa have swimming pools?
Swimming pools aren’t a standard feature at all South African gyms. Virgin Active stands out by offering a network of distinctive pools that set us apart. We’re proud to provide swimmers with the largest swimming pool estate in the country, maintaining consistently high standards year-round.

What types of pools do gyms usually offer in South Africa?
Virgin Active has two types of swimming pools for you to enjoy:

  1. Lap Swimming Pools (20-25m) are maintained at 27-29 degrees.
  2. Leisure Swimming Pools (8-12m) are maintained at 30 degrees or higher.

Where can I find the closest heated swimming pool near me in South Africa?
Your closest heated swimming pool is most likely at your local Virgin Active gym. The only other places are probably school facilities, which are generally not open to the public.

Do gyms offer swimming lessons in South Africa?
Not all gyms have pools to offer swimming lessons. However, with Virgin Active, swimming lessons are provided either by independent tenants who run their business independently or, like Virgin Active, have their own swim school catering to all abilities and ages.

Yes, there are Aqua Aerobics classes at the gyms, which are the second most popular group class behind Pilates.

Do I need to be a member of the gym to use the swimming pool in South Africa?
Yes, you need to be a Virgin Active gym member, but we are looking for ways to allow people to use the pools for their swimming lessons for an interim period.

Are Virgin Active swimming pools safe for both children and adults?
Virgin Active swimming pools are safe for adults and children when supervised by a swim coach or parent.

We’ve strategically placed life-saving equipment at all pools for immediate response in case of emergencies. Our staff and swim coaches are first aid trained and certified in pool rescue, and we regularly refresh their skills through drills.

Can I bring my children to swim in the gym pool?
Yes, we often see people using the pools for leisure activities over the weekend. We encourage it, actually. The pool is a great, safe environment for fun, so it is perfectly suited for children.
