Babies can start swimming early in life
The earlier, the better. Babies can start swimming lessons as soon as they are 6 months old. Early lessons help them get comfortable in the water and are a great way for you to bond with your baby.
Babies who start swimming early often pick up swimming skills quicker than those who start later. Before formal lessons, bath time is an ideal way to introduce your baby to the joys of splashing around.
Heated pools
Ensuring the water temperature is just right, at least 30 degrees Celsius, is essential. Little ones aren’t great at regulating their body temperature, so keeping them warm is necessary. Fun fact: babies that start swimming early might retain certain natural reflexes that can make learning easier.
Baby swimwear
Swimming nappies are a must-have for babies who aren’t potty-trained. Regular nappies won’t work in the pool. They’ll absorb water and even burst—no one wants that! We suggest a “double nappy system” for extra security. A swimsuit also helps keep your baby comfortable. Don’t forget the sunscreen if you’re outdoors!
Baby swimming lessons or baby swim spas
Baby swimming lessons are about bonding, water safety and building motor skills while you are in the water too. A baby swim spa is more about hydrotherapy and relaxation, with babies placed in floatation devices to enjoy gentle water massage.
Benefits of swimming for babies
Chlorine pools are safe for babies
Chlorine pools are generally safe for babies over six months old if the chlorine levels are properly maintained. If your baby has sensitive skin, they may get some irritation, so it’s a good idea to rinse your little one before and after swimming and use a moisturiser afterwards. Virgin Active pools are tested daily to ensure the water is always safe.
Tips for swimming with your baby
Babies and floatation devices
Armbands and floaties aren’t recommended for babies, as they can hinder the proper swimming posture. Pool noodles work great for babies around 9 months old who can hold on by themselves, but remember, supervision is always necessary.
Swimming helps relax babies
Swimming can be a soothing activity for babies, especially when the water temperature is just right and they’re well-rested. The gentle movements in warm water can be super calming for your little one.
Swimming should always be a positive experience, so if your baby is having a tough day, it’s okay to skip the lesson and try again later.
