Wellness trends and tips are about to hit us all hard again the minute the festive season is over, and we’ve all been there — ready to try the latest quick trick to get fit for the new year. I can’t even count how many times I’ve scratched ‘get fit’ off my list of goals for the year.

The truth is, I’ve been influenced by so many of the fads out there — from 28-day meal plans to gym schedules that promise the body of my dreams. They all sounded so easy at first, like a magical fix that would finally transform me. But every time, I’d find myself feeling more miserable than the Grinch on Christmas, stuck in a cycle of disappointment and frustration.
I bought workout plans that guaranteed “results in 30 days,” only to end up exhausted and questioning my sanity. I drank things I’d never touch now, and even tried to convince myself that the discomfort was “all part of the journey.” Spoiler alert: it wasn’t, and my body quickly let me know. Turns out, good nutrition and consistent exercise are what really moves the needle. It’s just science, right? But back then, I didn’t want science. I wanted a quick fix that would get me where I wanted to be without the effort. Needless to say, that never worked.
Then, one day, I decided to try a different mindset. I took the phrase “If he wanted to, he would” and flipped it around: If I wanted to, I would. If I wanted to finally get healthier, I would show up for myself, even on days when it felt impossible. Once I made that promise to myself, things began to shift. I still hated it at first. Every workout felt like a battle, and it took everything I had just to get through it. Gradually, that commitment made all the difference.
I’ll be real with you: I’m still not “fit” in the way I once imagined. I haven’t turned into a fitness influencer or achieved some ideal body type. But what I am is a lot healthier and happier than when I started. I’ve found a rhythm that works for me, and it’s built around things I actually enjoy. Attending Power Pump and swimming laps have all become part of my routine, and they’ve honestly changed the game. The classes at Virgin Active are fun, and they make me feel strong and balanced. There’s a sense of support and encouragement in each class that keeps me coming back — something I never thought I’d say about a gym.
I also love the little (BIG) luxuries that Virgin Active offers. There’s a cozy spot where I can grab a coffee and catch up on emails before my class, and the showers and spacious dressing areas make it easy to freshen up afterward. I can even relax in the sauna when I need a little extra self-care. These are the details that make my daily trip to the gym feel like a treat rather than a chore. I’m not just going through the motions; I’m giving myself a real experience that feels worth the effort.
So, here’s my message, my only tip for anyone who’s tired of falling for wellness trends: leave the cult, join the club. It’s the best decision you’ll make for your wellness journey. When wellness is real, the results are real too. No more quick fixes, no more chasing trends, just a steady commitment to showing up for yourself, one day at a time. Your mind, your sleep and your body will thank you for it!
